How to Install Framed Trench Grating

With framed trench grating the frame is installed first and the cover follows. Get the frame level, anchored and grouted correctly and the cover will seat properly for years.

Setting a steel frame before installing a framed trench grating cover

Order of work

Framed grating is a two-stage install: the frame goes into the slab first and is anchored and levelled, then the cover is fitted. Rushing the frame stage is the usual cause of a cover that will not sit flat.

Installation steps

  • Set the frame: position it in the opening at the correct finished level.
  • Level and align: check level along the length and across the width.
  • Anchor it: fix to the slab or to anchors as specified.
  • Grout or bed: fill around the frame so load transfers into the concrete.
  • Let it cure: do not load the frame before the bedding has set.
  • Fit the cover: seat the cover and check the fit and clearance.

Levelling detail

  • Set the frame top flush with the finished floor, not proud of it.
  • Follow the designed fall where the surface is graded.
  • Check level in both directions before anchoring fully.
  • A proud frame is a trip edge; a low frame collects water and debris.

Cover fit and clearance

  • Confirm the cover seats fully on the frame, not on debris or high spots.
  • Check the cover-to-frame gap is even and small enough to avoid rattle.
  • Allow for coating thickness on galvanized work.
  • Check any hinge or lock operates freely after installation.

Final checks

  • No rocking when walked or driven over.
  • No gap between frame and surrounding floor.
  • Cover lifts for access as intended, using the provided handles or keys.
  • All fixings present and tight.

Installing Framed Grating FAQ

Can I fit the cover the same day?

Only after the frame is anchored and the bedding has set; loading too early is a common fault.

The cover rocks—why?

Usually an unlevel frame, debris on the seating, or insufficient bearing.

Does galvanizing affect the fit?

Yes. Allow for coating thickness when checking the cover-to-frame clearance.
