Serrated Steel Grating: specification overview

Serrated steel grating uses a toothed bearing surface to provide additional edge interaction underfoot. It may be considered in wet or contaminated access areas, but the word “serrated” is not a complete slip-resistance result.

Actual performance is affected by contaminant type, footwear, walking direction, bar orientation, drainage, wear and cleaning. The serrated profile also does not establish load capacity; the bearing-bar section, spacing, clear span and support still require their own check.

Surface selection is only one control

Good drainage, housekeeping, lighting, footwear policy and access design remain part of slip-risk management. Where a project requires a measured coefficient or a named slip test, include the exact method, condition and acceptance value in the enquiry.

Specification wording

State “serrated bearing bars” together with the complete grating designation, dimensions, finish and applicable drawing. Confirm whether every panel, only a walking route or selected stair treads require the serrated surface.

Does serrated mean slip-proof?

No. No open grating surface can remove every slip risk; the full site condition and maintenance plan matter.

Does serration increase load capacity?

Not by itself. Structural selection remains based on the stated bar section, spacing, span, material and load case.

What should be shown on the drawing?

Mark the serrated areas, bearing direction, panel orientation, finish and any project-specific test requirement.
